CLASS RANKINGS

VALEDICTORIAN/SALUTATORIAN

It is the philosophy of the Vermilion Parish School Board that the honors of valedictorian and salutatorian be awarded to students whose cumulative grade point averages not only reflect the quality of instruction in the entire school district, but specifically to those who exemplify the highest scholastic achievement in the school from which they graduate.  The students obtaining a standard diploma with the highest and second highest grade point average based on final grades, after all grades have been officially reported by teachers, shall be selected valedictorian and salutatorian respectively.

Student Notification

All students from seventh grade through senior year will be provided with written information and policies about concurrent enrollment, correspondence courses, honors courses, proficiency examinations, the full senior year requirement, and the policy for valedictorian/salutatorian determination.  From the point that a student has earned at least one Carnegie unit, the school will provide that student with an annual, printed cumulative record of all Carnegie unit courses taken, grades received, and grade point average.

RANKING OF STUDENTS

The ranking for students obtaining a standard diploma, regardless of graduating date, shall be determined by the grade point average computed for each year of high school.  The quality point average based on final grades shall be calculated in accordance with the procedures and formula outlined in the Pupil Progression Plan for the Vermilion School System.  The final average to determine the rank of each student shall be computed to four (4) decimal places.

Scholastic Honors Registration Requirement

To be eligible to compete for scholastic honors in a particular school, a student must have been registered in that school for the final semester of his/her senior year.  If a student failed to register during the first ten (10) days of the spring semester because of personal illness or illness in the family, this fact must be substantiated by a doctor’s certificate.
