CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES AND

EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

The Vermilion Parish School Board shall be committed to providing for each of its schools a program of student activities to all students in a manner which allows students equal opportunity to participate in services and activities.  All activities shall be in compliance with pertinent regulations of the Louisiana Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE).

All work missed by students while participating in student activities or events shall be made up and completed in a manner that would be required of any other students in order to receive credit.

No student shall be allowed to participate in any event on the day or night while the student is under suspension from school.

Student participants are not permitted to drive to and from functions away from school without authorization from the School Board.  Student participants may only be released to a parent or guardian for a return from an out of town activity.

CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

Co-curricular activities are activities that are relevant, supportive, that are an integral part of the program of studies in which the student is enrolled, and that are under the supervision and/or coordination of the school instructional staff.

Co-curricular activities may be scheduled during instructional time with an opportunity to make-up any classroom work missed as a result of the activity.

EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

Extracurricular activities are those activities which are not directly related to the program of studies, which are under the supervision and/or coordination of the school instructional staff, and which are considered valuable for the overall development of the student.   Extracurricular activities shall not be scheduled during instructional time.

Nothing in this policy is intended to limit a teacher’s authority to require a pupil to leave a particular extracurricular activity when the teacher has evidence that the pupil’s behavior has been in violation of Board policies or school rules regarding pupil conduct. A report of misconduct of such a pupil and the action taken by the teacher shall be reported to the appropriate school administrator at the earliest possible opportunity, preferably not later than the beginning of the next school day.

Notwithstanding any policy, rule, or regulation adopted by the School Board to the contrary, no student otherwise eligible to participate in an extracurricular activity, including interscholastic athletics, shall be limited in the number of such activities in which the student may participate in a school year.

SPECIAL EDUCATION STUDENT PARTICIPATION

All non-academic and extracurricular services and activities shall be offered to all exceptional students in a manner that allows them equal opportunity to participate in services and activities.

PARTICIPATION IN FIELD TRIPS, CO-CURRICULAR, OR EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED DURING INSTRUCTIONAL TIME

Students shall not be allowed to miss a class that they are failing (cumulatively) to attend any field trips, co-curricular or extracurricular activity.  A student who is failing a course(s) since the beginning of the year (full credit course) or the beginning of the semester (1/2 credit course) and wishes to participate in an activity which is scheduled during the same time as the course(s) he/she is failing, must meet with the principal, teacher of the course(s), sponsor of the activity, and parent (if possible) prior to the scheduled activity.  Every possible option should be attempted in order to allow the student to attend the activity, while not missing the lesson presentation.

Factors to be considered in the event that a student, beyond his/her control is unable to meet the options provided by the school are as follows:

  1. If the student is being honored, participating, or competing as an individual or with a team in a State or National activity and is not able to meet any of the above options, the student shall still be allowed to attend the activity.

  2. If the student has always given a reasonable effort (i.e., completing class work and homework, meets with teacher or others in an attempt to pass, has not given up in the course, etc.) in the course(s) he/she is failing and has attended the course on a regular basis, and cannot meet any of the above options, the student may be allowed to attend an activity at the local, parish, or district level.

  3. If the student is part of a group or team representing the school in a competition, then the student may be allowed to attend the activity.

  4. If the student is passing the current nine-weeks with a high enough average to bring the cumulative average to a passing grade, then the student may be allowed to attend the activity.

After all of the above has been considered, the principal will make a decision on whether or not to allow the student to attend the activity.  This decision may be appealed by the parent, teacher of the course(s), or sponsor of the activity to the Superintendent and/or his/her designee and his/her decision shall be final.
