LEAVE WITHOUT PAY
The Vermilion Parish School Board may grant leaves of absence without pay, for periods not exceeding one (1) year, to any employee who requests such leave in writing, when in the opinion of the School Board such leave is in the best interest of the school system. The granting of such leave shall not affect any tenure rights which the applicant may have acquired prior thereto, and the applicant’s seniority shall continue through the term of the leave.
Requests for leave of absence without pay shall be submitted to the Superintendent or his/her designee, in writing, at least fifteen (15) days prior to the effective date of the leave, whenever possible.
The granting of such leave shall be with the intention of both the employee and the school system that the employee returns to the same position he/she left. The School Board may reassign an employee taking leave without pay to a teaching, administrative, or similar position within the person's area of certification or job responsibility if a vacancy occurs. Such reassignment shall be effected in accordance with the School Board's transfer policy and procedures.
Authorized leave without pay is not to be interpreted as days to be used for temporary absences for personal reasons. However, leave without pay may be granted for short-term or long term absences for educational, medical, or personal reasons when approved by the School Board, for periods of up to one (1) year after proper request.
PROCEDURES
Requests for leave without pay shall be processed in accordance with the following procedure:
The employee’s request shall be submitted in writing to the Superintendent’s office.
The Superintendent shall be granted decision authority for leave without pay requests of one (1) to five (5) days duration.
In cases where the request asks for a leave of more than five (5) days, the request shall require School Board action. Submission of the request should arrive in the Superintendent’s office in sufficient time to be placed on the School Board agenda.
During a leave without pay, there shall be no accrual of annual leave for twelve-month employees.
No employee on leave without pay shall engage in any gainful employment except for part-time employment of 20 hours or less per week and only in the event that the employee held such part-time employment for at least 120 days prior to making application for leave without pay.
