NEW MEMBER ORIENTATION
The Vermilion Parish School Board realizes the importance of a functional orientation program for new School Board members. Under the guidance and directions of experienced School Board members and the Vermilion Parish Superintendent of Schools, orientation shall be provided new School Board members to allow the members to become fully informed about the School Board's functions, policies, procedures and problems. Administrative staff members shall participate in such activities, when appropriate.
Orientation for new members shall include, but not be limited to the following:
In the interim between election and assuming office, new members will be invited to attend all meeting and functions of the School Board, including executive sessions, and are to receive all reports and communications sent to School Board members.
A special workshop will be convened for the primary purpose of orienting new members to the responsibilities, the School Board’s method of operating, and to school system policies and problems.
New members are to be provided with copies of all appropriate publications and aids, including the School Board Policy Manual and publications of the state and national School Board associations.
The School Board chairman and members of the administrative staff will also confer with new members as necessary on special problems.
It is recommended that designees visit all schools in the district. New members should attend regional, state, and national school board association meetings. Expenditures for attendance at such meetings shall be a budgetary item.
