CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES AND

EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

The Iberia Parish School Board shall be committed to providing for each of its schools a program of student activities to all students in a manner which allows students equal opportunity to participate in services and activities.  All activities shall be in compliance with pertinent regulations of the Louisiana Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE).

All work missed by students while participating in student activities or events shall be made up and completed in a manner that would be required of any other students in order to receive credit.

No student shall be allowed to participate in any event on the day or night while the student is under suspension from school.

Student participants are not permitted to drive to and from functions away from school without authorization from the School Board.  Student participants may only be released to a parent or guardian for a return from an out of town activity.

All schools shall refrain from scheduling any school or school related function involving student attendance on Wednesday evenings, unless necessary.

CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

Co-curricular activities are activities that are relevant, supportive, that are an integral part of the program of studies in which the student is enrolled, and that are under the supervision and/or coordination of the school instructional staff.

Co-curricular activities may be scheduled during instructional time with an opportunity to make-up any classroom work missed as a result of the activity.

EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

Extracurricular activities are those activities which are not directly related to the program of studies, which are under the supervision and/or coordination of the school instructional staff, and which are considered valuable for the overall development of the student.

Extracurricular activities shall not be scheduled during instructional time.

Notwithstanding any policy, rule, or regulation adopted by the School Board to the contrary, no student otherwise eligible to participate in an extracurricular activity, including interscholastic athletics, shall be limited in the number of such activities in which the student may participate in a school year.

Eligibility requirements for extracurricular activities

  1. Availability of extracurricular activities is determined by student interest, economic feasibility and program accountability.

  2. Membership/participation in extracurricular activities must be conducted within clearly defined guidelines that must be stated in the organization’s constitution and published in appropriate designated areas of the school to allow maximum opportunity for participation.

  3. All rules governing an interview, tryout or qualification process for membership/participation must be posted and advertised in an appropriate manner and posted at least fourteen (14) school days in advance of the scheduled interview, tryout or qualification process.

  4. No student shall be allowed to participate in any event on the day or night while the student is under suspension, including in-school suspension, from school.

Should a suspension be administered on a Friday or regular school day immediately preceding a school holiday on which extracurricular activity shall be taking place, the student’s suspension for purposes of the extracurricular activity shall begin on the day the extracurricular activity takes place.

Despite the fact that a suspension from an extracurricular activity occurred, a student may face elimination from an extracurricular activity for conduct, behavior pattern or attitude that is inconsistent with the constitution or purpose of said organization.

  1. Any student charged with any offense which may be punishable by hard labor which occurred on or off school property, or during a school sponsored activity, shall be suspended from extracurricular activities until such charges have been disposed of by law.  Any student who pleads guilty or is convicted of any offense in any court of law which would have resulted in an expulsion, had said offense been committed on school property, shall be eliminated from extracurricular activity unless continued participation is part of the student’s court and/or school administration approved probationary status.

  2. All discipline measures taken against students participating in any extracurricular activity shall be administered equitably, uniformly, and consistently.

  3. No student shall be denied credit or award that has been earned by the successful completion of a term, period, season or other designated time period of participation in an extracurricular activity.  However, a student may be excluded from participation in any ceremonial recognition of extracurricular activity achievement if the student is no longer a member of said extracurricular activity at the time of the award ceremony or is in violation of conduct as prescribed in number 5 above or deemed not to be a member in good standing of the particular extracurricular activity because of conduct, behavior pattern or attitude that has taken place since the credit for participation was earned but prior to the awards ceremony.

SPECIAL EDUCATION STUDENT PARTICIPATION

All non-academic and extracurricular services and activities shall be offered to all exceptional students in a manner that allows them equal opportunity to participate in services and activities.
