The Iberia Parish School Board met in Regular Session at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, August 5, 2015 in the Board Room at the Administrative Office, 1500 Jane Street, New Iberia, Louisiana.

The President called the meeting to order. Mr. Henderson introduced the two Jeanerette Senior High teachers, Ms. Jean Meaux and Ms. Alli Viator, who were injured in the shooting that took place at a theater in Lafayette a couple of weeks ago. Ms. Meaux and Ms. Viator were in the audience along with other staff members of Jeanerette Senior High for the introduction of the new Assistant Principal at that school.

The Opening Prayer was led by Mrs. McNeal and the Pledge of Allegiance was led by Mr. McDonald.

CONSENT AGENDA -

Section D of the agenda is the Consent Agenda. Board members may remove any items for individual consideration.

There were no requests. The Consent Agenda remained as published.

AGENDA ITEM E2 - CENTER STREET ELEMENTARY PROJECT - BID NO. 1043

Mr. Dugas moved, Mr. Pradia seconded, approval of the construction documents for Bid No. 1043 - Center Street Project, as presented.

AGENDA ITEM E3 - INTERGOVERNMENTAL AGREEMENT - EARLY INTERVENTION PROGRAM

Mr. Lockett moved, Mr. Buford seconded, approval to enter into an Intergovernmental Agreement with the 16th Judicial District, Office of Family Services, as presented.

The motion was unanimously adopted.

AGENDA ITEM E4 - RESOLUTION - YOUTH SUICIDE PREVENTION AND AWARENESS WEEK - SEPTEMBER 7 - 11, 2015

Mr. Lockett moved, Mrs. Rosamond seconded, to adopt the following resolution:

PROCLAMATION

WHEREAS, suicide Is one of the most disruptive and tragic events families and communities can experience. Nationally, there are more than 30,000 annual youth suicides, making suicide the “fastest growing killer of youth today,” and

WHEREAS, adolescent suicide knows no ethnic, economic, social, or age boundaries, and it is a significant cause of death in Louisiana and in the United States; and

WHEREAS, suicide is the third leading cause of death for young people between the ages of 15-24 in Louisiana and the United States, claiming more than 5,000 lives a year; and

WHEREAS, the issue of suicide and how to prevent it is of extreme importance, and there is and immediate need for suicide awareness and prevention; and

WHEREAS, the Yellow Ribbon Suicide Prevention Program is recognized internationally as a symbol for youth suicide prevention and awareness by suicide prevention groups, crisis centers, schools, churches, youth centers and hospitals, counselors, teachers, parents, and youth throughout the world; and

WHEREAS, statewide initiatives like the Louisiana Youth Suicide Prevention Task Force, which is chaired by the Department of Health and Hospitals, Office of Public Health, Louisiana Adolescent Health Initiative, is dedicated to working collaboratively with the Yellow Ribbon Suicide Prevention Program to prevent youth suicide and suicidal behaviors in Louisiana; and

WHEREAS, statistics show that 95 percent of all suicides are preventable and that awareness, education, and action save lives. Community awareness encourages the development of suicide-prevention strategies. The Iberia Parish School Board is pleased to be at the forefront of suicide prevention, leading the worthwhile efforts.

NOW, THEREFORE, the Iberia Parish School Board does hereby proclaim

1. School Starts Friday for Grades 1 - 12. K and PreK students begin next week.

2. Iberia Parish Schools are fully staffed.

3. Summer graduation will take place at the educational center on August 20th.

4. The proposed 2015-16 budgets and variance reports are at each member’s place. The public hearing and board meeting on the budget will take place on August 26^th.

There being no further business, Mr. Buford moved, Mr. Dugas seconded, that the meeting be adjourned.
